Strongfrontier Orientation Programme

An orientation programme for the Strong Frontier workshop will take place at our seminar hall on Wednesday, 10th December 2008 at 10 am. The idea is to provide a brief background on what the topics are that will be covered at the workshop.

Update:
Report prepared by Gauhar

Anant gave an orientation talk for Strong Frontier 2009 workshop. He explained various things,e.g. chiral symmetry breaking, chiral perturbation theory, string theory and nonpertubative methods in QCD etc. He spoke of the importance of these issues in testing QCD as an appropriate theory of strong interactions. He also dicussed Heavy Quark Symmetry and Heavy Quark Effective Theory which have quite importance in Heavy flavour Physics.

Links to recent talks given by members of the group

Here are links to some recent talks by members of the group.

Gauhar's talk given on November 5, 2008 on the work of Kobayashi and Maskawa is here.

Anant's talk given on November 11, 2008 on dispersive and analyticity constraints on the pion formfactor is here.

Anant's talk given on September 10, 2008 at the time of the first beam at LHC is here.

Joint publications of group members as on Nov. 20, 2008

We will also provide links to joint publications of group members.

Anant and Sunethra have two joint publications, on analyticity and analyticity and dispersive contstraints on the pion form factor. At the time of this post, the first is published while the second is a preprint. These may be found here and here.

Gauhar and Anant have a joint publication with Kriti Ashok and S. Uma Sankar in Current Sciene as a Research News publication on the anomaly in the charged and neutral direct CP violation signals in the B meson system. The link is here.

Log of fourth group meeting, November 18-19, 2008

Imsong presented his perspective on elementary particle physics. Details are here.

Log of third meeting, October 24, 2008

Monalisa shared her views on particle physics, its areas of research, etc.

The main points that she covered in her talk were:

1) introduction of particle physics as being an exciting area of research that involves both using and extending the most fundamental theories to understand the basic structure of the universe.

2) its history starting from its birth in 1897 with J. J. Thomson's discovery of electrons, till today where all the theoreticla and experiemental developments are digested and summarized in a single theory called the Standard Model (SM).

3) Triumphs of SM: its prediction o fhte particles properties and inclusion of exactly three families of quarks and leptons has strong experimental support.

4) Shortingcoming of SM: At a deeper scientific level this model has a fundamental eakness, referred to as electroweak symmetry breaking. The most serious criticism of the SM has to do with gravity and the origin of mass.

5) Current areas of research: Most of the research activity is done on the study of extensions of the SM. Comlementary to these studies are also proceeding in leptonic mixing & CP violation, along with data coming from b-factories.

Log of second group meeting, October 3, 2008

Topic of discussion was CP violation in neutral flavoured mesons.

In the present scenario CP violation is one of the best ways of discovering physics beyond the Standard Model. The most important experiments searching for this effect involve neutral flavoured mesons. We discussed the way it shows up in the physics of these mesons mainly kaons and B mesons. The main stress was given to the B-meson systems as they show a direct CP violating effect compared to the small effect in K mesons.

Log of first group meeting, September 17, 2008

The first group meeting was held on September 17, 2008. The participants decided to meet frequently and exchange ideas. General ideas of particle physics were discussed, including some aspects of strong interaction dynamics. Sunethra spoke about recent work on form factors and dispersive and analytic constraints on these.

Welcome to this website

This is the web-site of our group, which for purposes of identification is named after Anant. All the members are equal participants and these are Gauhar Abbas, B. Ananthanarayan, I. Sentitemsu Imsong, Monalisa Patra and Sunethra Ramanan This is the web-site that will record our group activity, and will post archival material relevant for our joint work and is mainly for our internal purposes.
